Abstract

543 smears were obtained from the Department of Oral Medicine, Chonnam University Hospital, in the 17 months, March 1998 to August 1999. All samples were classified according to clinical impressions ; ulcerative, inflammatory, hyperkeratotic, and fungal or bacterial disease. Papanicoulau staining was carried out for light light microscopic(LM) examination and cell counting. Cells were counted with their color and nuclear size. Additionally, nuclear to cytoplasmic ratios were evaluated.
For LM fingings, the presence of inflammatory cells with basaloid cells was diagnosed as ulceration. Also, the presence of fungal hyphae or bacterials colonies was diagnosed as fungal infection or bacterial infection each. Cell counting with nuclear size and the degree of keratinization was more reasonable than that with color. Most of oral mucosal diseases showed lower ratio than normal except leukoplakia and candidiasis.
Finally, oral exfoliative cytology was helpful to discem the overall condition if allowed to obtain proper smear with enough clinical data.
